In this episode we discuss some findings from a recent test flight were we went out to examine how the Garmin G1000 would behave during a missed approach from a circling procedure. Our findings were quite surprising and IFR pilots need to hear about it, regardless of your avionics setup! We also discuss the importance of monitoring your AP/FD modes.

Most FMS systems will try and re-establish you into the missed approach via the most direct route to get there (make good the next leg). Depending on where you are around the airport, that turn may not be within the circling area. You almost have to wait until you are re-established over the airport with the nose pointed in the right direction before you select go-around. Thank god, except for in the mountains where you can't get a straight in to either runway end, most circling approaches have been eliminated across the country.

Thank you for the great content. After listening to this episode and the episode regarding IFR clearances with VFR restrictions, would you be able talk about Visual and Contact approaches and particular going "missed" off of these approaches? Comments are closed.
