In this episode, we talk bout the importance of punctuation when it comes to clearly interpreting written IFR departure procedures and missed approaches. I also bring up some of the challenges in converting a fixed-wing license to helicopter.
6/25/2020 Cardinal Aviation Audio Briefings Episode #32 (Forced Approaches, What Are Your Considerations?)
Engine failures and forced approaches are something that we hope to never experience but something that we must always practice and be prepared for. In this episode, we discuss some things to think about when it comes to making a survivable forced approach.
We discuss my three favourite questions that I constantly ask myself in an effort to maintain situational awareness and to stay ahead of the airplane and also talk about a recent flight in the mountains where we ditched the GPS and the tablet and went back to navigating "old school".
We share with you 2 big failures and 1 massive success. It involves copious amounts of beer and helicopters. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves what it is like to drink from the firehose and this week I did just that by taking a very humbling introductory helicopter lesson.
"You know, it would be embarassing to get out of an upside-down SuperCub with a bent-up prop and a scuff on my helmet. But it would be better than not getting out and having to pull me out and waking up three months later with a brain injury." - Steve Thorne, Flight Chops
If you're a fan of Flight Chops on YouTube, you may have recently seen an episode about helmets and his first flight in the Harvard wearing one. On this episode of Flying BC I catch up with Steve for a follow-up now that he's flown with it a few more times. And I also bring Kevin Maher and Ryan VH on board to expand on the idea of whether we should be wearing helmets while flying. Even if you don't think you'll ever wear one, this episode has some great discussion about safety and survival that is worth a listen. (Also features Jeremy from TacAero's original story from Flight Chops) 6/6/2020 Cardinal Aviation Audio Briefings Episode #29 (Weather Flying, Deviations & Block Altitudes)
In this episode, we talk about a recent flight around a large area of convective activity and provide some tips on how you can work with ATC to stay safe.
6/1/2020 Cardinal Aviation Audio Briefings Episode #28 (Something is Burning and NO This Cessna Can't Hover)A quick recap of the flight we had with a client today that involved a precautionary landing and a bit of a fuelling mishap. A solid mix of humour and lessons learned. You really can't make this stuff up! Ocean View Helicopters Website |
